THE THURSDAY MARKET

Every Thursday between 5 and 8 PM, a popular street market takes place on the main downtown Square of Noumea “Place des Cocotiers”, and highlights every week a different special theme or region. Some favourite annual themes are Loyalty Islands Thursday, Northern Province Thursday and Tahiti Thursday when there are numerous traditional dances, music, arts and crafts, fresh produce, cakes and local dishes. The people of Noumea and tourists like to stroll through the market in a friendly atmosphere. The Thursday night market is worth a visit. (Max Herrenschmidt)










The Zoo

The zoo is located near the center of the city, on the top of a hill called "Montravel". 
The zoo is opened from 10.15 AM to 5.45 PM.
Many endemic animals like the cagou bird can be seen there.
There are 700 animals and 130 different species.

The Cagou bird

The cagou is the emblem of the New-Caledonia.
It can’t fly but it can run very fast. It’s an endemic bird and it is protected.
Its plumage is grey and blue. Its beak is orange. It is carnivorous.

The Tjibaou Center
The Tjibaou center is a public museum,situated between the bay of Tina and the bay of Magenta. It consists of 3 giant wooden units that remind the traditional melanesian housing.
This center , opened from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m, is dedicated to the primitive art. We can see sculptures, paintings, taro fields, arrows apex, the statue of Jean-Marie Tjibaou and many other objects symbolizing the kanak culture.
This center was built between 1995 and 1998 by the architect Renzo Piano. It was inaugurated in May, 4 and 5, 1998. The name of this museum has been assigned as a tribute to the pro independence leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou who was assassinated in 1989. (Valéryane Berger)


 Noumea City

Noumea is a beautiful city!
Noumea is the capital of New-Calédonia and it’s located in the southwest of our island. The most famous beaches in Noumea are «l' Anse Vata» and «la Baie des citrons».
In L' Anse Vata, you can practice windsurfing because there is a lot of wind. You can practice Kitesurfing too.
There are not real shopping centers in Noumea but there are many shops Downtown.
The main street in Noumea is ‘la rue de l’alma’ where there are very good shops for men and women, boys and girls. You can find jewels, perfumes, clothes, and many other things.
Noumea has got a very beautiful flora and fauna. You can do a lot of activities: Visiting the zoo, the Aquarium, two museums... You can also do boat cruises , fishing…..

Nouméa market
The market is located near the harbour in Noumea. It was built in 1990. 
It is opened daily from 5am to 12am .
There is a lot of fruits (watermelons,coconuts, bananas…), and all the vegetables. Yams and taros are well represented, being the main veggies in the Melanesian diet.
A building is dedicated to the fishes. We have two kinds of fishes : lagoon fishes because we have a big coral reef all around New Caledonia. It's the second biggest in the world after the Australian Great Barrier, and the deep sea fishes. The main local fishes are the Coral Trout and the Blue Barred Parrotfish. (Yan Lancrenon)


 La Baie des Citrons
This beach is a very popular. It is located near the city center. It is about one kilometer long.The sports practised are: waterskiing, swimming in the sea and beach volleyball. Along the bay there is a hotel, many restaurants, bars, discos and shops.
La Baie des Citrons is only 5 km from the city center. You can take the bus. The ticket price is 210 francs
(about $2) .

L'Anse Vata

This beach beach is also located next to La Baie des Citrons. This beach is great!
In this bay there are restaurants, bars and, what teenagers here call « The Complex» which is a « spot» where they always meet.
Because of the wind, people,here, practice windsurfing. (Carlyne Lecante)
